Back in the golden olden daze, when I was just a lad, my friends and I would fence and stage mock duels with anything that resembled a sword; my favorite for many years was a broomstick that had been cut in half along the longitudinal axis, with a plastic bicycle grip duct-taped to one end.
Elegantly costumed movies from the late 1960's - like Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet and Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton in The Taming of the Shrew, as well as the superlative 1975 Three Musketeers with Michael York, Oliver Reed and Raquel Welch (containing a good twenty minutes of the finest fencing ever captured on film!) - piqued public interest not only in Shakespear, but in the Italian Renaissance; and birthed the Faire circuit we all know and love today.
By the early 1970's some very nice swords from Spain and India had become available - mostly through the import shops like Pier One, which made clear the way for establishing the SCA. Those early days before any such thing as rules existed were chaotic to say the least. By '77 kingdoms had been established and I was knighted as Sir Robert the Brave of Bonzo that year.
Today there exist a plethora of outlets for swords, sabers, battleaxes and polearms that run the gamut from historically accurate to purely fantastic; from well-made, practical and functional to cheesy wall-hangers more dangerous to the weilder than to their foe, and a dizzying array in between.
The intended purpose of this compendium is to assist the neophyte and adept alike in the selection of either modern or antique edged armaments to suit the shoppers personal preferences and needs.
There are links on this page that will lead you to pages on which there are swords costing thirty thousand dollars and more. There are other links here where you can buy a sword for under twenty dollars. There are a mind-boggling array of in-betweens to suit the needs, wants [andbudgets] of everyone from Museum Curators to the Merely Curious!

Atlanta Cutlerty and Museum Replicas, once considered the "best in the business" and perveyors of Del Tin swords made of K-5 German steel but sadly devolved into mere peddlers of stainless steel wall hangers with a service department more likely to screw up an order than to get it right, are linked to in this text, but the Undefeated Swordmaster's recomendation is to avoid doing business with them if the item you're shopping for is available at any of the other sources listed here - even at a higher price!
All of the time you'll save that you would otherwise spend in sending back items you never ordered and hassling with them on the phone could be better spent honing your fencing skills or playing with that cute lil' Tammy Shigiri!
Here's my recent letter to them:
Dear Nancy,
I am very sad to have witnessed the decline in both the quality of merchandise and in the field of service that Museum Replicas / Atlanta Cutlery have exhibited in the last few years.
Hank would be sorely disappointed.
I first became a Museum Replicas customer in the late 1980's and I still own some of the pieces I bought back then; their superiority to the products you now sell is very painfully obvious.
Back then yours was one of only a very few outlets available for any such products.
Today, however, such is no longer the case; with precious few exceptions, there arenīt many items in your catalog that canīt be found elsewhere for better prices - and without any mistakes in order fulfillment.
The "mistakes" made by your pickers and shippers have increased until I am quite frankly sick and tired of it.
I remember when I could place an order and anticipate its arrival in high spirits; it has come to the point, however, where I cannot place an order with you without wondering which aspect of that order is going to be screwed up, as at least one thing in each and every order over the past three years has been.
Yes, you may send a "pick-up" for the item you sent by "mistake."
Do not, however send anything else; instead, refund my monies, cancel my "round table" membership, and cancel all outstanding orders or backorders.
I am furthermore happy to accept your offer to remove me from your mailing list; please be certain that no further solicitations from either Museum Replicas or Atlanta Cutlery are addressed to either Post Office Box 2986 or to 2150 North Windmill Way in Chino Valley, Arizona (zipcode 86323) - to either me or to my wife Karin Wolf.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Robert "Bob God" Taylor
