The Next Generation

The path for a peacetime army of med-techs, eco-techs and educators is clear and has been well scouted. The first wave of potential recruits are the young amerikans who are about to enter their senior year of high school. If they were offered the alternative of a two year tour of duty with a degree and job at the end, a generation down the road we might well be faced with a populace motivated enough - and educated enough - to reap the benefits of the space race and lead the world into the twenty-first century.

When the next generation of amerikans choose the leaders of those leaders, the absolute elimination of political graft could be as certain as it is simple. Imagine a land where elected officials are truly servants, not employees, of their constituency. Politicians of today debate in every session the pros and cons of term limitations. Any person ought to be allowed to serve as many terms as they are able to get themselves elected to, with but one restriction; that incumbents not be allowed to run for office. If it is true, as great minds throughout history have postulated, that no one can serve two masters, then it follows that no politician can manage a campaign and serve their constituency as well! Think of what would become of the dynastic demagoguery that Washington and Jefferson fought to put an end to if no politician in amerika ever served consecutive terms; it would once and for all become a thing of the past!

Another thing that the pork bellies in D.C. can't get their tiny minds made up about is a way to balance the budget. To paraphrase a popular media idiom, "... it's your salary, stupid!" The offices of today's senators and congrespersons are larger than the apartments many of us struggle to pay rent on. Meanwhile, the salaries they draw could be put to far better use housing the literally thousands of homeless amerikan families (in Bucky's domes!). If a politician is sincere in their desire to serve amerika, they should have no reservations about working for room and board! They are, after all, public servants, not public employees.

With the post-cold-war military turned to educational and health care duties, thousands of barracks in the Washington D.C. area would stand empty and ready to serve as lodging for legislators! With the needs of our representatives at the capitol so well met, a new law might be enacted which would narrow the focus of our elected officials interests to that of serving their respective constituencies instead of helping themselves. Imagine what would become of the special interest lobbyists that plague our legislative body if it were made illegal for elected officials to show any income during their term of office.
